ART550 Collab at the F.I.L.E Festival, Sao Paulo, Brasil, 5/26-8/11 2019

I am happy to announce that “WE” will be included in the Animation & GIF exhibition during the F.I.L.E – Electronic Language International Festival 2019 – www.file.org.br

The exhibition will be held from June 26 to August 11 2019 at The Fiesp Cultural Center – Ruth Cardoso Center, at the Galeria de Arte do Sesi – SP (Art Gallery of SESI-SP) located at Paulista Avenue, 1313, São Paulo, downtown, Brazil. http://www.brazilmycountry.com/sao-paulo-attractions/fiesp-cultural/

F.I.L.E is a non-profit cultural organization founded in 2000 with a main goal of promoting and motivating artistic research and production on electronic language, as a way to set a meeting point for discussing art & technology in Latin America.

Short abstract about the work: “WE”, is an animated video art work / GIF.
Statement – “We” Our ART550 class of fourteen people came together to create the project we call “We”. That is what is important. That is all that matters. The separations we perceive between ourselves are artificial. We are more than just our looks and the skin on our bodies. We all share the same basic human characteristics. This concept is a worldview that is incredibly common, but this piece proposes another idea entirely. The skin is not a wall separating and ostracizing individuals, but rather a bridge, connecting pieces of a whole. When we are near each other we can feel how we permeate togetherness. We act like an ocean and each so-called self is a singular drop of a shade of color needed to cascade into the intense spectrum that is We. We, as work of digital art represents the preservation of our class energy throughout time and the way we view our experience as a whole. Through technology and art we are preserving ourselves in unity and our interconnectivity forever.

Class Collaboration 2017

Collaboration Synopsis:

This is a studio work session / reflective exercise based class.

Students will chose to bring in the materials of their choice (not mandatory but you may choose to) to generate, complete and present their group outcomes during this class session. If you have a lap top computer, this would be a good class to bring it to (not mandatory but may prove useful).

This class project is generated, documented, presented and critiqued in immediacy all in one class session. We will record our process and results by publishing them to our class blog. Each group will submit a statement of their piece and then individually respond below.


Group #1 – Statement: – Meghan, Sharron, Laura & Chie


Duality kickstarted with personal experiences revolving around male expectations of feminine behavior. From this cloud of negativity positive success stories were shared, which in turn highlighted the complex thought process culminating a duplexity of feminine mindset in society. Examining what is said or projected versus what is actually felt allowed us to simplify emotions as related to representational colors.

Each artist identifying with a specific color was able to recognize the duality of their hue. Yellow radiates happiness, warmth, perfection. When thought of as mustardy yellow, the grit of earthy elements forms a dichotomy of image.  Red is a hue that has the power to motivate yet intimidate a soul. It’s dominate nature can be overwhelming but in turn can also be used as inspiration to try something new. Pink is associated with femininity and sweetness but when turning a hot pink it can represent an edginess. Blue can denote an inner weakness and sadness yet it serves as a stable source of strength. These colors and feelings suggest how people see you and how you see yourself. It has the power to bring the imperfections of humanity to the surface if only in the subconscious.

Duality is the collaboration of four strong women permitting the simultaneous transmission of two messages in opposite directions. We reveal the complexity of the female mind and celebrate the ability to prosper through challenges.


Group #2 – Statement – Grace, Len, Joselyn and Hyon.

Our presentation centered on the socio-political causes that most interest us: ANIMAL RIGHTS, THE ENVIRONMENT, HOMELESSNESS and NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION. As these issues were discussed, pertinent articles were downloaded and digitally collaged on top of a photo of planet earth as a unifying visual, illustrating how all of these concerns are presently at-risk due to the policies of Donald Trump.

What did you learn the most through this collaborative experience?

How did the immediacy of the project’s time-frame effect your decision making and ability to work in a group?

What will you apply into your writing practice as a result of this experience?

Thesis Formatting from a Class Brainstorming Session 9/15/14

In our class on 9/15/14 we began talking about the formatting for our thesis papers.

MFA students that will be graduating in May will need to turn in their final thesis by the end of December. First and second year MFA and MA students will have the opportunity to simulate the structure of the thesis paper by generating a research based paper into their current work with the intention of also mounting an exhibition. (This is great practice for the real paper and exhibition)

*A Thesis Statement will be worked on in class this coming Tuesday 9/23.


1. Description / Abstract: Introduction. A detailed description of the body of work that you will be discussing and planning to exhibit.

2. Process, Materials and Methods: Descriptions of your working process, techniques, and the materials used to generate the art that you create. Why have you selected these specific materials and techniques to communicate your ideas? How do these choices effect how the viewer will receive your work?

3. Resources and References: Historical influences, artists, art movements, databases, and any other form of related influence. How have your references influenced your work, ideas, and decision making process as an artist?

4. Exhibition Simulation: How will you be mounting your exhibition? Why have you selected this particular composition? How will your installation effect the space itself? A floor plan sketch to accompany the proposed composition.

5. Reflection: What have you learned over the course of your graduate program? How has the program influenced your work and how you communicate as an artist? What skills will you apply directly into your professional practice?
